Wizard’s First Rule, the first novel by Terry Goodkind, was a phenomenon from the moment it was published by Tor Books in 1994, selling more than 100,000 copies in North America alone. It still sells more than 100,000 copies a year and has gone on to bestsellerdom in the United Kingdom and in more than twenty foreign translations as well as audiobook form.

It is now being developed as one of the most ambitious television miniseries of all time. Executive Producer Sam Raimi (director of the three Spider-Man movies), in collaboration with Disney/ABC, is creating a 22-episode adaptation of the book to be filmed in New Zealand.

Richard and Kahlan’s story unfolds over ten more novels, collectively known as the Sword of Truth series, concluding with Confessor in 2007. Placing Goodkind in the elite club of #1 New York Times bestselling authors, the series has sold more than twenty million copies to date worldwide.

In Wizard’s First Rule, Goodkind introduced the world to an ordinary forest guide, Richard Cypher, and the mysterious, powerful woman he comes to love, Kahlan Amnell. Learning his true identity, Richard accepts his destiny as the one man...

A dear friend recommended this series to me, and although I don't usually make many forays into the genre of fantasy, I decided to take the plunge. And wow, have I been glad that I pushed through my usual wariness. This was a fabulous read, and I am already on the second book. While Terry Goodkind isn't exactly a wizard with words, the world which he has created, along with the characters who people it, are nothing short of amazing. The book is full of unexpected twists and turns, with enough humor and lightheartedness to keep it from being dark and depressing. I highly recommend this book not only to the fantasy aficionado, but to those looking to broaden their horizons a bit. You'll be glad that you did.

I enjoyed all his works. In parts Wizard's First Rule is very descriptive, but it reads very well and keeps you hooked. It's a long book, but as I said, it kept me hooked. Characterisation is really good. Very inventive with lots of fresh ideas. I'd recommend this

The book that launched the popular 'Sword of Truth' series deserves every piece of credit attributed to it. Goodkind's fantasy novel presents many of expected components within the genre, however his tightly woven narrative style and attention to character development make his work stand tall against that of his peers. Goodkind ensures that the relationships of the characters, both within the good and evil camps, and then how they interact with each other, are artfully constructed, an essential part of the plot rather than a distraction.Wizard's First Rule is as much melodrama as it is fantasy yet don't let that deceive you in to thinking this is a simple love story. Wizard's First Rule is a bleak and starkly horrific tale at times and it's epic story does nothing to diminish the personal torture the central protagonists must endure to overcome the evil opposing them. There are some original aspects within, Goodkind's skill lies in twisting old ideas in to something new, frequently taking the story in unexpected directions, lulling readers in to a false sense of security, before brutally ripping the rug from under their feet. A must for fantasy readers Wizard's First Rule is an mature, enthralling and emotionally charged read.
